Cawit White Beach
Cawit is one of the 13 barangays in the town of Pilar. It has a coordinates of N10.7 E124.5 or it is located on the southern tip of Ponson Island. It has a total population of 3,264 (2006 census) and the source of livelihood is mostly fishing and farming.
Cawit is famous for its powdery white sand and crystal clear water. A lot of people from different places visit Cawit to go swimming and the nice thing about it is.., it’s free of charge. Some visitors bring their tent and stay overnight at the beach to relax, feel the breeze, breath the fresh air and some bring guitar to sing with friends.
The white beach in Cawit is also unique that a portion of it is deep enough for the huge fishing boats, pamboats/bancas and barges to dock without the need of a pier. And because of it, Cawit became a center for transportation going to neigboring places like Leyte and Cebu. Currently, there’s a trip daily (MB Stingray 1 and MB Junmar 1) from Cawit to Ormoc City in Leyte. Another trip (MB Stingray 1) from Cawit to Baybay City in Leyte every Tuesday and Saturday. There’s also a trip to Mandaue City (MV Junmar 2) every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Aside from the regular trips of huge pamboats, several small boats in Cawit can be arranged to ferry passengers to different parts of Camotes Island on a “pakyaw” basis. Meaning the passenger will rent the boat (with operator) for a certain amount depending on where he wants to go.
Another thing that is unique to Cawit white beach is its ability to change its formation depending on the season and the change in sand formation totally change the view of barangay Cawit. During “Habagat” time, July-November, a large portion of the white sand moves to the east including the deep portion of the beach. During this time, huge pamboats and fishing boats will dock on the eastern part of the beach. When “Dumagsa” wind will blow, December-February, the white sand will move back to the west and will form a deep portion on the west side of the beach and during summer time, March-June, the white sand will slowly move to its orginal place, the white sand is balance on the east and west side of the beach and the deep portion is in the middle.
