How The Towns Got Its Name

Published by edcoraza

PILAR

The town was eventually called “Pilar” after the name of the wife of Capitan Martin Borinaga, who was loved by all because of her unfailing kindness, helpfulness, and solicitude for her people. Capitan Martin is the eldest son of Capitan Solferino Borinaga (first captain). They were the first settlers from Cabalian, Leyte.

SAN FRANCISCO

The place started as a barrio called SUANGAN, because in its surrounding forest before there were plenty of “SAWONG” trees from which served to light people’s houses at night when there was no kerosene lamp yet. In this place lived a saintly old man by the name of Francisco. He was highly respected by all that when he died, the barrio was named San Francisco in his honor.

PORO

The name PORO is derived from the waray word “Puro” meaning, Island. The early inhabitants of Poro were from Samar who were attracted by the rich fishing grounds of the Camotes Sea. Later on, they were joined by others from Cebu, Bohol, Panay which accounts for the difficult and strange dialect of Poro which is a mixture of Waray, Cebuano, Boholano and Ilongo.

TUDELA

The first name of TUDELA, one of the four municipalities of the Camotes Group of Island, was Tag-Anito, derived from the practice by its inhabitants of worshiping Anitos or Spirits. When the Spanish friar, Ramon Alegria, became parish priest of the town, he changed Tag-Anito to Tudela in honor of his hometown, Tudela in Spain.
